European Hockey League

The European Hockey League is an ice hockey association’s contest held in Europe which was organized in the years 1996-2000. CWL Telesport and the InternationalIce Hockey Federation founded this league in the year 1996. It was initially started in 1996-1997 where about 20 teams played in around 5 divisions.

The winners in the division including 3 best teams on the second position moved to the quarter finals. Finnish side TPS who was considered as the first winners beats Russian HC Dynamo in Moscow by 5-2. About 24 teams fought in 6 divisions in the year 1998-1999.

Again the winner from these teams reached to quarter finals. Austrian won the league by beating Russian by 5-3. In the same year, the top two teams in every division moved to playoff competitions. The winners from these 6 playoffs moved to the semi-final round and were played in 2 leagues. The winner from these 2 leagues played the final round.

In the year 1999-2000, 16 teams played this match in 4 divisions. The two best teams from every division moved to the semi final round and the game was played as away and home games. The 4 winners from the semi finals are eligible for the European Hockey League Top 4 Final.

In the final round, Metallurg Magnitogorsk beats Czech Sparta Prague by 2-0. In the year 2000-2001, it was decided by the IIHF that the European Hockey League will be suspended.

After improving the excellence of the contest and financial investment, concentration from the audience, media and television networks in Europe seems not to be adequate. Then, the IIHF consulted with the European presenters to optimize the publicity of the league in Europe . A club contest was started worldwide in Europe but European Hockey League was not started.
